Metal monolayer-modified Pt surfaces can provide enhanced catalytic activity for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR) at the cathode in PEM fuel cells. We report here on investigations of surface alloys with one or multiple metal (Au, Pd, Ir, Sn, etc.) monolayers on Pt (111) single crystals prepared by physical vapor deposition (PVD) in UHV. Surface science techniques such as LEED, XPS, LEIS, STM and TPD were applied to elucidate geometric and electronic structure and correlate oxygen binding properties.  These surface alloys are well suited for the study of catalytic properties of model electrocatalysts based on known systems, and also for the discovery and development of new highly active, durable, and low cost electrocatalysts for fuel cells. Basic research studies of these systems address the origin of catalytic activity and builds a scientific foundation for the art of modification and optimization of electrocatalysts.
