We examine the analytic structure of Kohn-Sham potentials corresponding to gradient-dependent density-functional approximations. A convenient general formula for functional derivatives of such approximations is derived and shown to be useful for developing new integrable model Kohn-Sham potentials and exchange-correlation density functionals. As an illustration, we turn the model exchange-correlation potential of van Leeuwen and Baerends into a functional derivative and derive the corresponding density functional.
