Toward Self-Healing Super-Repellent SurfacesWeihua (Marshall) MingMaterials Science Program, University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH 03824Millions of years of evolution have perfected �synthetic� strategies in Nature that lead to superior materials and elegant structures, such as �self-cleaning� lotus leaves. Self-healing is a hallmark of living tissues, such as the healing of our skin wound. The lotus leaf also has this trait: its self-cleaning character is maintained by the self-reproduction of waxy crystalloids whenever the leaf surface is damaged. In this talk, I will discuss our recent successful endeavors in obtaining super-repellent surfaces by mimicking the multilength-scale surface structure of the lotus leaf, and shed some lights on possible strategies toward self-healing super-repellent surfaces.
