?6-Coordination of the tricarbonylchromium group is known to activate arenes in unique ways.   Thus, a benzylic C-H bond is rendered acidic and may be easily deprotonated.   Disclosed is a novel use of the resulting tricarbonylchromium-coordinated benzyllithium directly in a palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling cycle to selectively afford polyarylmethane derivatives.   Products accessed through this method include medicinally relevant scaffolds such as di- and tri-arylmethanes, cis-substituted diaryl indanes, and benzylamines, as well as fully-substituted benzylic ethers and dendrimeric compounds of high symmetry.
