Novelnon-toxic high performance imaging Organic Nanoparticles (OPNs) based uponorganic conjugated polymers and far-red emitting dyes have been synthesized.The OPNs are stabilized by polymerizing hydrogels about their exterior and canbe modulated to selectively bind specific cells by placing appropriate ligandsin this hydrogel coating. New imagingmethods based on far-red optical imaging and two-photon excitation can providethe capability of detecting small tumors. The use of conjugated polymers which presentexceptionally large two-photon optical absorptions allows an exquisite spatialresolution and provides the performance needed to operate at moderate laserpowers. These OPNs have significant general performance advantages over thetraditional toxic quantum dots in terms of the ability to create absorptionsand emissions at optimal wavelengths. Surfacechemistry can be developed to selectively localize breast cancer cells.
