The injection of nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) into the subsurface is a promising technology to treat chlorinated hydrocarbons. To enhance the stability and mobility of bare nZVI, various surfactants and polymers have been used as stabilizers. A key requirement of the stabilizers used with nZVI for site remediation is low toxicity. The goal of this study was to investigate the role of extracts from green tea as stabilizers with commercial iron produced by the gas-phase reduction of Fe oxides. Green tea extract was found to provide more stabilization of nZVI in settling tests than carboxylmethyl cellulose (CMC)-coated or polystyrene sulfonate(PSS)-coated nZVI. The particle size and zeta potential of green tea-coated nZVI was measured at 324 nm and -36 mV, respectively.
