The hydroarylation of an unsaturated bicyclic lactam (2-azabicyclo[2.2.1]hept-5-en-3-one) with a range of aryl iodides, protection of the nitrogen and chromatographic separation of regioisomers followed by nucleophilic ring opening was employed as a facile route to stereodefined trisubstituted cyclopentane analogs.
