Non-ionic associative rheology modifiers are used widely in waterborne coatings for their desirable rheological and application properties.  The development of low and zero VOC coatings that are cost effective and high performance relies on enabling technology innovations.  To achieve practical viscosities, associative rheology modifiers are often supplied in water/solvent solutions and thus contribute VOC to the coating.  Further, today's home is increasingly being painted with deep, vibrant colors which require coatings to be tinted with high colorant levels leading to significant decreases in viscosity.  This decreased viscosity leads to coating defects, including low sag resistance and poor film build.  This paper will describe two new rheology modifier technologies that address these performance issues, 1) a pH triggered viscosity suppression technology wherein the associative thickening network can be turned on and off, thus allowing delivery in a solvent-free aqueous solution, and 2) a combination technology where proper blends of low and high molecular weight thickeners provide viscosity stability upon tinting.
