Nanomaterial-based devices hold great promisefor many electronic and photonic applications, but cost-effective methods forreliably defining and addressing sub-20nm components are lacking.  Traditional �top-down� lithographicmethods such as photolithography and electron beam (e-beam) lithography offersuperior spatial registry and defect control, while �bottom-up� self-assemblycan achieve higher resolution and chemical precision.  Merging the two strategies could yield an effectivefabrication process, but this is hindered by a gap between roughly 10 and 100nm which both strategies have difficulty bridging.  Synthetic DNA nanostructures such as two-dimensional DNA�origami� may be able to span this gap because they can be rationally designedto be hundreds of nanometers in size yet retain chemical functionalitypotentially down to the resolution of a single DNA helix (2 nm). We havedemonstrated the assembly of DNA origami with controlled placement andorientation onto a lithographically patterned silicon substrate and used themas templates to direct the arrangement of 5 nm gold nanoparticles
