Pyrophosphate is a biologically important target.Our group  has recently demonstrated that HBO-2DPA-2Zn2+(figure1)  acts as a fluorescent and colorimetric sensorfor pyrophosphate at pH 7.0 in aqueous solution with highly selectivity comparedwith H2PO4- , F-, Cl-,CO32-. Upon adding pyrophosphate, the fluorescence changesfrom blue to green, presumably by turning on the excited state intramolecularproton transfer(ESIPT) in the HBO moiety. For the best of our knowledge, this representsthe first example of an ESIPT turning-on mechanism for anion sensing.
