The aggregation induced emission (AIE) phenomena displayed by group 14 metalloles is well documented. Classical organic fluorescent labeling compounds, such as fluorescein, experience self-quenching upon aggregation, which limits the detection capability of fluorescent-based immunoassays. Progress toward the synthesis of 1,1-substituted derivatives of siloles, germoles, and stannoles such as 1,1-diethynamine-2,3,4,5-tetraphenylsiloles will be presented. This study aims to prepare metallole like substrates that are well suited for coupling to proteins, antibodies, or other biopolymers. X-ray crystallography data, spectral data, and preliminary photophysical data will be presented as well as a description of the methods employed to link these new fluorophores to proteins.
