Thermoelectrics (TEs) are long lived, dependable, solid state devices. TE cooling and energy harvesting find numerous niche applications, but many potential uses of TEs exist if greater efficiencies can be achieved. Thermoelctric figures of merit (ZT) twenty times greater than current TEs have been predicted for quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) materials [Casian In Thermoelectrics handbook: Macro to Nano; Rowe, D. M., Ed.; CRC Press: 2006]. Q1D materials are formed from parallel stacks of molecules. Benzo[1,2-c:3,4-c':5,6-c�]trithiophene (BTT), a known Q1D material, was doped with 7,7,8,8-tetracyano-p-quinodimethane (TCNQ), a well known electron acceptor. The doping was conducted in order to improve BTT's semiconductive properties, retain the material's Q1D behavior, and yield improved thermoelectric parameters. A single crystal structure analysis showed a compound with the stoichiometry (BTT)2TCNQ. The BTT-TCNQ-BTT triads pack as independent units so the overall material is not Q1D and therefore not expected to exhibit thermoelectric properties as large as those predicted by Casian.
