Diiminerhenium(I) carbonyl complexes have attracted much attention because of theirintense metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) emission, long-lived excitedstate lifetimes, and large photoluminescent quantum yields. Novelbromo and tert-butyl isocyanidetricarbonyl rhenium(I) complexes with a thiophene-functionalized bis(pyrazolyl)pyridine ligand (L): ReBr(L)(CO)3 and [Re(tBuNC)(L)(CO)3][PF6],have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction,NMR studies and photophysical methods. Rhenium(I) complexes incorporating athiophene-functionalized bis(pyrazolyl) pyridine ligand are highly luminescentin both solution and solid-state and have lifetimes on the order ofmicroseconds. This intense emission is consistent with phosphorescence from anemissive MLCT triplet excited state with an additional minor contribution from ligandcentered phosphorescence. For these reasons, this type of complex shows muchpromise as electropolymerizable phosphorescent materials for application inpolymer light emitting diodes. Synthesis, X-ray crystallography and detailedNMR and photophysical studies of these complexes will be presented.
