The mechanical properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) have been measured as a function of retainedtetrahdyrofuran, chloroform, and ethanol mixtures. The ethanol is a byproductof a typical hydrolysis/condensation reaction of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), whichis used in creating polymer-inorganic hybrid. Thermogravimetric analysis anddynamic mechanical analysis were used to characterize the cast PMMA films with0-15 weight percent of THF:CHCl3 or THF:CHCl3:EtOH. Theglass transition temperature decreased with increasing solvent content over arange of 30 degrees. The modulus was seen to be more depressed for mixturecontaining ethanol. The ethanol is believed to lower the modulus further due toits higher boiling point and potential hydrogen bonding with the PMMA chains.
