Conjugated materials have received muchattention because of their photophysical and electrochemical properties thatmake them suitable for plastic electronics. Although polythiophenes are one ofthe most widely used conjugated materials, their synthesis relies on stringentreaction protocols often leading underside defects and variable properties. Away to avoid these problems is to prepare polymers using imine linkages.  The advantages of this approach are that simplecondensation between an aldehyde and an amine is required for forming a robustbond and that water is the by-product. Therefore, highly conjugated polymers of high molecular weight arepossible. In this work, we present the synthesis andcharacterisation of an automer (1) derived from thiophene. The automer contains both complementaryfunctional groups and can react with himself, leading to oligomers andpolymers. Herein, we report the synthesis of a new automer and theelectrochemical and photophysical properties of its condensed products (2-5).
