Polyimides (PI) are an important class of specialty polymers that could be found in a wide range of applications, e.g. high performance films and fibers, coatings, microelectronics, optoelectronics, adhesives, aerospace structures, nonlinear optical devices, light-wave guiding materials, and liquid crystal displays.  Recently, polyimides containing benzonitrile units have been studied for the piezoelectric and other dielectric applications due to the high polarity of cyano groups.  Thus, in this work, an asymmetric and two symmetric aromatic diamines were synthesized from a controlled nulceophilic halo-displacement reaction of 2,6-dichlorobenzonitrile with 3- or 4-aminophenolate, and subsequently polymerized with 2,2-bis(phthalic anhydride)-1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropane (6FDA), respectively, to afford three structurally related polyimides.  Their solubility, solution, thermal and dielectric properties were investigated with respect to their applicability as heat-resistant & low dielectric loss films in high performance capacitors.
