Drug formulations generally contain a mixture of chemical substances that each contribute to the overall efficacy, stability, and efficiency of the system. The excipients in the formulation are typically biocompatible polymers that adopt several key functions including stabilization of the active ingredient, controlling the release of the active ingredient, and optimizing the rheology of the bulk formulation. Characterization of molecular weight, hydrodynamic size, concentration, and purity is important when screening the system's stability, function, and performance. This presentation will focus on the characterization of polymeric excipients pre-formulation and post-formulation using advanced detectors in-line with size-exclusion chromatography.
