The formation of oxides ontransition metal surfaces has been actively studied because of its importancein understanding heterogeneous catalytic reactions.  In particular, the study of surface oxides onPt(110) has received much attention. Oxidation reactions over Pt are bothindustrially significant and fundamentally interesting.In this study, we usedambient pressure XPS, high pressure STM, and DFT calculations to investigate oxidationof Pt(110) as a function of O2 pressure, temperature and gas composition.AP-XPS results demonstrate that two different surface oxygen species form onPt(110) surface at > 500mTorr O2: chemisorbed oxygen and islandstructured surface oxide. HP-STM images under the same conditions confirm theformation of these oxide islands and XPS chemical shift is in agreement withDFT calculations for a-PtO2 (0001). We present the pressure andtemperature dependence of both oxygen species and kinetic measurements of thereaction CO + O ? CO2 for each adsorbed oxygen species.
