Johnson Matthey PtRu (1:1) andin-house prepared PtRu (1:1) were investigated by electrochemicalcharacterization, x-ray diffraction (XRD) and small angle X-ray scattering(SAXS) to elucidate correlations between the structure, composition, grain sizeand particle size distribution, with catalyst performance. Johnson Matthey PtRucatalyst shows higher electro-active surface area (ESA) and better catalyticperformance for methanol oxidation normalized by mass loading. The Ru-richsurface for both catalysts is determined by analyzing CO stripping peakpotentials and lattice parameters. SAXS measurement shows a bimodal sizedistribution for both catalysts. SAXS results are analyzed using threedistribution modes, number-weighted, surface area-weighted and volume-weighteddistributions. A Riemann Sum method is applied to obtain several expected valuesfrom SAXS measurement. The SAXS results suggest that to increase the proportionof small particles or decrease the size range of large particles would behelpful to improve catalyst performance.
