Recognizing the need for continued forward thinking in analytical chemistry instruction, a consortium of chemistry faculty involved in curriculum development and chemical education research was awarded an NSF Phase 2 grant to develop Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) materials for analytical chemistry.   In this project, classroom activities based on core analytical chemistry principles have been developed, peer-reviewed and classroom tested.  These activities use the POGIL learning strategy that develops student problem solving, critical thinking and communication skills through the examination and analysis of data, graphs, instrument schematics or similar models. These instructional materials are modular; they can be used in traditional analytical courses or any course that includes analytical chemistry principles. An assessment protocol of the efficacy of these materials has been formulated that includes an analysis of student content mastery, process skill development, and attitudes.  A description of the project, activities and classroom usage will be presented.
