Extensive effort and development have been made in the size- and shape-controlled synthesis of noble metal nanoparticles. One of the main motivations in synthesizing noble metal nanostructures of various sizes and shapes is to explore their interesting optical properties, largely originated from the localized surface plasmon resonance. Wet-chemistry-based synthesis of noble metal nanostructures often rely on use of polymeric capping agents or surfactants, which brings a disadvantage of restricted the access to metal surfaces, and pose challenge to chemical/biological modification with desired molecules often required in various applications. We report here the synthesis of a series of submicron Ag structures without use of any capping agents or surfactants. Pronounced surface enhancement of Raman scattering from molecules adsorbed on a single particle was observed. Instead of the size-dependent localized surface plasmon resonance, it is believed that the vertex- and edge-states play a major role in the observed enhancement of Raman scattering.
