We have previously shown that porous silica microparticles can be used for the uptake and release of chemotherapeutic drugs, DNA plasmids and siRNA. Here we report the adsorption of several enzymes, which was dependent on the pore diameter of the solid and on the strength of the interaction between the enzyme and the pore surface. We also compared the adsorption properties of porous materials modified with polyethyleneglycol to decrease surface/enzyme interactions. Encapsulation experiments were performed in which disulfide linkages to polymers were appended to the external surface of the particles; cleavage of the disulfide provided access to the enzyme. Several enzymes that degrade pesticides and other toxins were tested for activity after immobilization and we present the results of these tests.
