A comprehensive review of all of the fixatives used for the preservation of biological tissues in the field of histopathology and cell biology is explored. Chemical agents are frequently used to prevent autolysis of the tissues. This is essential for the preservation of cellular details, which leads to accurate interpretation of normal structures. Selection of the right chemical fixative is essential as this aids in the astute identification of pathological alterations and changes in a tissue, leading to early diagnosis of diseases. This plays an essential role in prognostic implications for patient survival. The paper reviews in depth the different types of chemical fixatives and methods used for tissue preservation. In addition, their advantages, and disadvantages will be discussed along with the preferred chemical fixatives used for different types of tissues.
