We have studied HDS (hydrodesulfurization) of dibenzothiophene (DBT), 4-methyl dibenzothiophene (4-MDBT) and 4,6-dimethyl dibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT) over Ni-MoS2/?-Al2O3 catalysts prepared with citric acid as chelating reagent and with conventional co-impregnation method as reference. In the presence of Ni promoter, a significant synergy effect can be observed in catalytic activity for all three DBT derivatives. It was also found that the selectivities of Mo catalysts for DDS pathway increase with the addition of Ni. However, the DDS selectivities are almost constant over the whole family of bimetallic Ni-Mo catalysts. This indicates that the structure of the active NiMoS phase for HDS might be uniform and independent of preparation method and Ni/(Ni+Mo) atomic ratio. Furthermore, the addition of citric acid in the synthesis of Ni-MoS2/?-Al2O3 catalysts results in an enhancement of catalytic activity up to 50%, as well as of the degree of sulfidation according to characterization results.
