Symbiotic colonization ofplant roots by fungi boosts plant resistance to soil-borne pathogens, as wellas to drought through improved water and mineral uptake. Auxofuran was recentlyidentified as the dominant substance in promoting fungal growth andectomycorrhiza  formation betweenfly agaric and spruce, and is the first such compound to have been isolated andcharacterized. Our progress toward the synthesis of this structurally unusualnatural product will be described.
