The purpose of the SHArK (Solar Hydrogen Activity Research Kit) project is to help find an efficient photocatalyst for the generation of hydrogen from water. We are working with nine other research groups to develop a low-cost, easy to use kit which can be distributed to other colleges and high schools. The kit will allow students to prepare new metal oxides and characterize the potential photocatalytic activity. We are exploring ternary and quaternary metal oxides containing rare earth elements, investigating possible metal oxide decompositions, and are developing methods to compare different scanned samples.
