Prototypical organic-inorganic hybrids based on transition metals have witnessed significant development and present unique and interesting challenges in terms of both structural design and properties. More recently, polyazaheteroaromatic compounds such as pyrazole, imidazole, triazole, and tetrazole in their neutral and anionic forms have been exploited in the construction of complex organic-inorganic architectures.  Triazole and tetrazole are attractive ligands for the design of novel hybrid materials because of their ability to bridge multiple metal sites, a super-exchange capacity reflected in unusual magnetic properties of their complexes, and their facile derivatization to provide bridging ligands with additional functionality.  In addition to the rich structural chemistry that evolves from such complex connectivity, transition-metal triazolates and tetrazolates exhibit interesting porous, magnetic, and optical properties. Our group has identified a number of structural themes present in these materials and has moved toward incorporating these into the design of new compounds. Structural determinants include the identity of the anionic component, coordination preferences of the transition-metal cation, and the di-, tri-, or tetranucleating properties of the neutral and anionic forms of triazole and tetrazole.  A structural survey of polyazaheteroaromatic compounds will be presented as well as their properties.
