Sustainability education offers a particular challenge to the engineering profession. It complicates engineering problems and designs, and extends engineering responsibility into domains, such as social system dynamics, for which engineers are not generally educated. When combined with other challenges facing engineering education, and the changes that are evident in student populations, it is likely that radical restructuring of engineering education will be necessary if the profession is to rise to the challenge of engineering in the twenty-first century.
