Benzyl complexes of group 3 metals (Sc, Y, Lu, La) supportedby a ferrocene-diamide ligand are reactive toward amines and aromatic N-heterocycles,such as imidazoles, pyridines, and anilines. Although the group 3 metal centersare redox inactive, the ferrocene diamide has the potential to be oxidized andreduced. By oxidizing the ferrocene ligand, the interaction between the twometal centers may be varied, and the ligand converts from being dianionic to monoanionic.The changed electronic properties of the ferrocene ligand, in combination withits steric properties, allow new reactivity for group 3 metal complexes.
