Transportation is one of the largest sources of human-induced greenhouse gas emissions and fossil-fuels consumption. This has led to a growing demand for hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) to reduce air pollution and consumption of fossil fuels. But hybrid-electric vehicles demand the battery to be discharged and charged at high rates under partial-state-of-charge condition. At present, candidates for the energy-storage systems in HEV applications are valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA), nickel�metal-hydride (Ni�MH) and rechargeable lithium batteries. The VRLA battery has advantages in terms of relatively low cost, high charge efficiency and safety compared to the other batteries.In this study, a one-dimensional modeling was carried-out to calculate the charge and discharge behaviors of VRLA battery used in HEVs. The model accounts for electrochemical reaction rates, charge conservation and mass transport. In order to validate the model, modeling results were compared with the experimental data in various conditions.
