Mealybugs are major economic pests of vineyard and fruit crops worldwide.  Direct damage caused by feeding is exacerbated by the growth of sooty mold on the honeydew produced by the insects, and by the transmission of plant pathogens.  The identification and synthesis of the highly irregular terpenoid pheromones of four important mealybug species (grape, vine, longtailed, and obscure mealybugs) will be described, along with the development of practical applications of the pheromones for detection, monitoring, and control of these major pests.  Important aspects of the biology of the insects, such as complications caused by possible pheromone races or cryptic species, also will be discussed.
