Anew method was developed in which core-shell catalysts are preparedby electrochemical pulse deposition of Pt selectively around Ru andAu nanoparticles supported on carbon. The obtained materials wereinvestigated by means of cyclic voltammetry, rotating disc electrodeand TEM measurements regarding the selectivity of platinumdeposition, ORR activity and particle growth, respectively. Thesuccess of the synthesis critically depends on the choice of thedeposition potential, while deposition time, solution concentrationand pulse number are means to tune shell thickness. Our currentactivities aim at synthesizing larger quantities of these catalystsin order to allow for in situ-XAS studies as well as for fuel celltests. We have utilized an electrochemical slurry reactor to depositPt onto carbon powder and carbon supported ruthenium nanoparticles.CO stripping experiments indicate selective deposition of Pt onto theRu particles also in this novel setup.
