The development of catalytic methods for the functionalization of carbon�hydrogen bonds remains a tremendous challenge in synthetic organic chemistry, and this presentation will describe my group's recent advances in the area. Our mechanistic approach towards the development of transition metal-catalyzed reactions has facilitated the discovery and optimization of selective Pd-catalyzed transformation of C�H bonds into C�O, C�Cl, C�Br, C�I, C�F, and C�C bonds under mild conditions. The scope, selectivity, and functional group tolerance of these reactions will be discussed. The application of principles derived from these studies to the Pd-catalyzed 1,2-difunctionalization of olefins will also be discussed.
