The uranium chemistry is dominated with U(VI) by the formation of uranyl cation, UO22+. In addition, they have characteristic sheet structures with diverse coordination environments favoring tetragonal, pentagonal and hexagonal bipyramidal in almost boundless combination. The terminal nature of the linear 'yl' oxo atoms of the actinyl unit favors formation of layers of coordination polyhedral. However, an unusual trend has been observed recently in which series of actinide based nanotubules were reported. Uranyl materials with nanotubular structures represent a very small subset of the thousands of uranyl compounds that have been prepared with only handful of examples being known thus far. Until recently, little is known about whether these class of compounds only represent fascinating structural architectures, or whether atypical properties can be derived from their unusual structure. This presentation will highlight results from our studies with aryl diphosphonates and the first demonstration of ion-exchange in uranyl diphosphonate nanotubules.
