Selective oxidation of organic compounds with molecular oxygen under mild conditions is one of the most fundamental reactions for future organic synthesis. Biomimetic  aerobic oxidations inspired by cytochrome P-450 and flavoenzyme lead to find various useful, catalytic methods. Ruthenium catalyzed aerobic oxidative cyanation of tertiary amines gives aminonitriles. This is the first example to achieve a-sp3C-H activation and direct carbon-carbon bond formation at the same time. Flavin catalyzed oxidation with molecular oxygen can be carried out under mild conditions. Oxidative transformations of amines, sulfides, ketones, and others proceed efficiently and selectively, providing useful methods for synthesis of biologically active compounds.
