We will discuss the synthesis and characterization of weak polyelectrolyte polymer brush films. These films expand and contract from a few nanometers to approximately 100 nm depending on the pH of the solution. During contraction they expel the solvent much like a sponge; therefore, we refer to them as 'nanosponges'. The uptake and release of peptides/proteins will be discussed, along with their structure-property relationships. We have synthesized cationic and anionic brushes and will compare their selectivity for different protein mixtures.
