A variety of acid catalysts have been used to promote the esterification of free fatty acids in vegetable oil during the process of biodiesel synthesis.  If immobilized on a resin, these catalysts can be easily removed and reused in subsequent reactions.  Beginning with tungsten(VI) chloride, we have successfully coordinated a tungsten containing species to a commercially available triphenylphosphine resin.  We report here our synthetic approach, the characterization of the resin bound species via swelled resin 31P NMR, and the results of catalytic studies involving the methylation of oleic acid.
