Halogen bonding (X-bonding) is a noncovalent interaction involving a halogen atom as an electron acceptor (Lewis acid) to any electron donor (Lewis base). Interest in X-bonding has increased dramatically over the last few years, and this interaction is now an accepted and useful tool for the rational design of a wide variety of functional materials. Almost all X-bonding reports thus far have involved either nitrogen or oxygen as the X-bond acceptor (e- pair donor). Our interest is focused on heavier Group 15/16 congeners as X-bonding acceptors. Some advantages of this approach will be highlighted, and recent results involving co-crystals of organoiodine molecules with phosphorus, sulfur and selenium containing compounds will be described.
