Guaiacol is a compound that can be considered to be prototypical among lignin derived pyrolysis oils, which are generally characterized by substituted phenols. The conversion of guaiacol catalyzed by Pt/Al2O3 was characterized in experiments with a once-through flow reactor and extensive capability for analysis by online GC-TCD/FID and offline GC-MS and GC-FID. The data identify principal and minor products, with the former including phenol, catechol, veratrole, and 3-methylcatechol. Other products include methanol, benzene, toluene, cyclohexanone, anisole, o-cresol, and methylguaiacols. The data determine catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability over a temperature range from 250-350oC. The data determine an approximate reaction network; the principal reaction classes include hydrogenolysis (hydrodeoxygenation) and methyl group transfer (transalkylation). The rates of the kinetically significant reactions were reported.
