The use of the microwave has impacted the field of organic synthesis.  Some of the benefits using microwave chemistry are shorter reaction times and less solvent waste. Our research group is currently developing a new laboratory for use in our second semester of organic chemistry lab.  We are using silica gel supported ammonium formate for deprotection of aryl acetates to the corresponding phenols in excellent yield with reaction times of 2-3 minutes.  This is an alternative method for the solvent based methods for deacetylation of aromatic acetates, which typically takes hours to produce the free phenols.
