Our group has worked to unravel some of the mysteries of the hypervalent iodine reagents iodosylbenzene (PhI=O) and tosyliminoiodobenzene (PhI=NTs) that have been extensively been employed in various transition metal catalyzed oxygenation and imination processes.  These unique materials have been somewhat ill-defined due to their insolubility in commonly used media.  Our studies of these materials have led to the discovery that introduction of appropriate substituents to the aromatic rings can disrupt intermolecular secondary I���O and I���N bonds and impart solubility for such species.  In addition, single crystals of the materials allow systematic studies of their solid-state structures by X-ray diffraction methods.  The reactivity of these materials, and their use in catalytic reactions, will also be discussed.
