Starting from regioselectively-prepared 2-halo-3-hydroxypropionic acid as the key intermediate, hyperbranched polyacrylates can be synthesized by homopolymerization of an inimer containing any ester substituent. Higher molecular weight polymers are produce by ATRP under reverse conditions than by standard ATRP conditions. The hyperbranched polyacrylates have relatively broad molecular weight distributions, consistent with the formation of hyperbranched polymer synthesized by self-condensing vinyl polymerization. The results demonstrated that the hyperbranched polyacrylates can be polymerized in aqueous-based systems as simultaneous reverse and normal initiation and normal initiation (SRNI)-ATRP, and activator generator electron transfer (AGET)-ATRP using emulsion and miniemulsions systems.
