In the past five years there has been a proliferation of publications describing the use of ionic liquids for the dissolution and subsequent homogeneous derivatization of cellulose. A number of factors influence the choice of ionic liquids for this purpose such as cellulose concentration, solution viscosity, and solubility of the cellulose derivative in the reaction media. From this perspective, in this account we describe our experience with a number of ionic liquids useful in the dissolution and derivatization of cellulose. We also provide the synthesis of a new family of ionic liquids and demonstrate their utility in the dissolution and derivatization of cellulose.
