Technologies currently exist to close the fuel cycle, but they fall short in meeting economic and, the not fully defined, nonproliferation objectives. They are based on technologies developed as early as the 50's followed by advancements in the 70's and a number of incremental improvements since then. This paper describes technology needs that support multi-objective fuel cycles, gives an overview of current technology status, and addresses the current technical challenges. Recommendations for an R&D strategy that shortens development cycles and decreases technology risk are given.
