Diode laser probing has been used to study the rotational relaxation of CO2 initially prepared in a single rotational state of an excited vibrational level, the 1001, J=17 excited state. A narrow band pulsed mid-IR OPO/OPA pumped by a Nd-YAG has been used to prepare CO2 molecules in the excited vibrational state via vibrational overtone pumping. Rotational relaxation via collisions with the CO2 was then monitored using a liquid nitrogen cooled lead-salt diode laser by observing the strongly allowed anti-symmetric stretch transition, 1001, J  1002 J-1. Tuning the diode to probe the different rotational states in the excited vibrational level allowed us to measure the degree of single collision rotational relaxation and the rate constant for the rotational relaxation.
