We investigated the electric dipole moments and polarizabilities of small Na�(NH3)(n) and diethylamine(n)�cresol(m)�H2O(p) clusters (n,m,p < 12). Molecular beams of the  substrates were deflected under high-vacuum conditions through an electric field gradient, and polarizabilities were determined from the shift and distortion of the beams' positional profiles after leaving this gradient. Theoretical calculations included a quantum dynamical treatment of the clusters' electronic system under a plane-waves basis set using the Car-Parinello method. Na�(NH3)(n) was expected to solvate like Na�(H2O)(n) (below)
