Anion-templation has been observed for a number of supramolecular metal-ligand architectures, notably in square and pentagonal motifs of the NiII ion with the ligand bptz (bptz=3,6-bis(2'-pyridyl)1,2,4,5-tetrazine).  In an effort to understand the nature of this templation, several other divalent first-row transition metal architectures have been synthesized with a variety of anions and their structures probed in the solid state and in solution by crystallographic and spectroscopic methods.  Complexes containing FeII have proven to be particularly useful in this regard due to its ability to exist in the diamagnetic low-spin d6 state when in an octahedral, all-nitrogen environment.  This allows for extensive NMR analysis of both motifs and provides an opportunity to probe the effect of different anions on their structures in solution.  With information garnered from both NMR and XRD investigations, correlations between the solution and solid-state structures are made, leading to a better understanding of the role anions play in the formation of these moieties.
