Glycopolymers are very attractive materials with many potential applications in the biological field. The advantages of glycopolymers rely on their biocompatibility, their low background noise in diagnostic tests and their numerous reactive sites (especially the anomeric ones). This last property can mediate the covalent binding of amino-derivatives including proteins or nucleic acid probes for ELISA or ELOSA tests. Another interesting characteristic of glycopolymers is their multivalency that favors the specific recognition of lectin proteins. Several glycopolymer architectures have been synthesized (by RAFT controlled radical polymerization) based on Gal, Man or GlcNAc derivatives, such as homopolymers, graft copolymers, gradient copolymers and biotin-end-functionalized polymers. Moreover, the biotinylated glycopolymers were end-grafted on gold nanoparticles. After deprotection of the saccharidic residues, the corresponding glycopolymers and glyconanoparticles were successfully used for the covalent binding of HBV nucleic acid probes or the specific recognition of WGA and ConA lectins.
