This talk will discuss the chemical reactivity andcatalytic activity of nanoscale gold particles and well-defined clusters, whichis an emergent, non-scalable property in the light of the well-known chemicalinertness (nobility) of bulk gold surfaces. Specific examples include oxidationreactions in gas phase, at oxide supports, on thin oxide films, and at surfacesof partially protected nanoclusters. An effort is made to relate thereactivity to the specific electronic structure of the active particles. Anovel phase of one-dimensional gold oxides may also play a role for the localredox chemistry in gold clusters supported by thin oxide films.[1,2][1]      O. Lopez-Acevedo, K.A.Kacprzak, J.
