Fenton-like reaction by nano- and micro-zerovalent iron (nZVI and mZVI) suspension was enhanced in the presence of Cu(II). The amounts of Cu bound nZVI and mZVI were constant (around 4 mM) as the concentrations of electrolyte added to reactant suspension increased, indicating there exist inner-sphere Cu surface complexes. The concentrations of ferrous increased proportionally to the increased amounts of Cu(II) (1, 10, and 20 mM) applied to each ZVI suspension and the enhanced reactivity was attributed to the release of sufficient ferrous ion from the ZVI surface. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopic analysis showed the formation of dendrite crystals in Cu(II) bound ZVI surface, revealing the sizes and distribution of the crystals were different in different particle size of ZVI system. The results of this work suggest that Cu(II) can play an important role to provide favorable condition for the oxidative degradation of trichloroethylene.
